How we build rental marketplaces that work in East Africa
Most rental marketplace playbooks assume card payments and stable connectivity. East Africa runs on M-Pesa, intermittent data, and a deep need for trust between strangers. We learned this building Rentopia.
First, payments: we treated M-Pesa STK push as the primary rail, not an afterthought. Card is available, but the checkout flow is designed around the phone number the user already has — not a card they may not.
Second, performance: we optimized for low-bandwidth. Server-rendered listing pages, WebP images, and a small JS bundle mean the marketplace loads on a 3G connection in seconds. This isn’t a nice-to-have; it’s the difference between a listing being seen or skipped.
Third, trust: we built a verification flow that requires landlords to prove identity and ownership before a listing goes live. It removes the fraud that historically killed marketplace adoption, and it converts because verified listings are marked as such.
The result was 200+ verified listings in three months. The lesson is simple: build for the market you actually serve, not the one in a template.
